Portable Computer Vs Desktop Computer

Lately the market has been filled with so many new computers. Specifically laptops and tablet PC's. The numbers of these are expected to balloon even more. For those planning on buying one this can be a hard decision to make. The choice between a portable system and a desktop computer can be confusing. Do you go with all the new trends? Or do you stick to something tried and tested?

Mobility
A big deciding factor when choosing between these two types of systems is mobility. Basically, portable computers are good if you need to take it along with you. This is ideal for students, businessmen and people constantly on the go. However, if you do not need to have a system with you all the time then there is nothing wrong with a desktop system.

Performance
Generally, desktop computers have the upper hand when it comes to performance. You can get a whole lot more from it than a portable computer. Desktops have better processors, memory and almost everything else. Although there are a number of portable computers that can compete, you generally get better results with a desktop. If you are planning on using your computer to run some major applications, for multimedia or for gaming desktop is the way to go.

Expandability
Portable computers have no expandability whatsoever other than increased ram. It would cost so much to upgrade a portable computer if it was possible. With a desktop computer you have the option for an upgrade anytime. It is easy to add and replace parts. Not to mention that these computer parts are generally cheaper as well.

Cost
The question of cost also comes up. The price of a desktop computer is a far cry from any portable system. If you spent what you did for a laptop on a desktop computer you would have a very powerful machine. In short, you can get a whole lot more on desktop computers for much less than a portable one.
