What is the Future of Cloud Computing Part III


Let's bring this full circle from Part I and II. With regards to the future viabilty of cloud computing .... there are questions to be answered and there are issues to be considered. But there also advantages and opportunities too. You need to understand the whole picture to draw an informed conclusion.

Repeating the questions from Part I:

* With so many companies rushing to announce their development in cloud computing /SaaS/PaaS in 2009, is cloud computing really economically viable in the long-term?

* Will large enterprises and Small and medium businesses actually go in for cloud computing and virtualization?

* What will be the benefits and problems associated with the same?

I believe as more companies continue to develop and push lots of money into cloud computing technologies .... we will see both large and small businesses sign on. As the supply increases, smaller companies can take advantage as the costs will decrease. For larger companies, they will see other benefits of this such as disaster recovery, uptime requirements, and quicker delivery to worldwide customers.

When looking at the benefits and risks of this technology I think it largely depends on whether the cloud is public or private. Private clouds offer lower risk for companies but at higher cost due to the entity footing the entire bill for the technology, while public clouds such as Amazon offer lower costs but more risks due to private information being saved on public systems. The benefits of both are similar, if done right. Companies will be able to take advantage of better uptime, reduction of downtime due to failures, and improved availability to customers.

Any industry that pushes information to mass communities spread around the world will be the front-runners. These would mostly be media companies such as news outlets, with their main focus of getting information out to the customer the fastest. In an example of the news, the company who can spread a story the fastest will get more readers. So using this technology to get the story to the customers around the world the fastest will have more readers and benefit from cloud computing.

The advantages of this new model are clear and massive. The customer still has full control of their services via various web admin portals, but they now don't need to buy the hardware outright, house it in a rack, pay for the power, the air cooling, the upgrades, the maintenance, the expensive engineers to support them, the replacement of hardware, the list goes on.... They get to pay for what they want, when they need it. Just like water from a tap, or electricity from the socket.

Wi-Fi was probably one of the most revolutionary transitions in modern times. Before the advent of Wi-Fi or wireless computing technology, users were tethered to their desks, routing everything through a LAN line and restricted in where they used their faster and more powerful computing technology by how long their cables were. It is difficult now to imagine life without laptops, yet it has only been a little over 30 years since their original conception. But probably the biggest influence on wireless computing was the development of WAP for mobile phones, allowing anyone to connect to the Internet using their mobile phone technology. Today, we feel short-changed if our mobile phone can't connect to the Internet on demand, 24/7.

What future for wireless computing?

The question of wireless computing's future is uncertain. Many believe that wireless computing has reached its full potential - we now have almost universal coverage thanks to a global satellite system creating a web across the world with very few 'blind spots'. Smart phones are feature-rich and future-proofed to a certain extent, and laptops are smaller, lighter and more processor powerful than ever. The only area that can really see any form of development to enhance wireless computing is in the field of battery-life. Mobile Computing - Technology Revolution and Futurist Forecasting Considered


Are we entering a technological revolution of futurist forecasting aided by artificial intelligence, and an abundance of information, which will better help us make decisions? Not long ago, someone mentioned to me the incredible exhilaration of innovation in the transportation sector and the personal tech sector. Whereas, I do see an incredible amount of forward thinking in the personal tech sector with the iPhone, new tablets, touchpads, e-book readers, 4G wireless smart phones, and human kinetic interfaces, I don't see the revolution of innovation in the transportation sector.

Perhaps, this is because the consumer is overwhelmingly enthralled with the new personal tech devices available, and since the devices don't cost that much, everyone is getting one, or perhaps even several, and it's not just the first adopters, it has totally entered the mainstream now. You don't have to be a transportation field editor to see that there is some innovation in the transportation sector. And yes the personal tech sector with GPS devices and computer interfaces with hybrid vehicles is interesting. But it's not really a revolution.

We've had bio diesel vehicles since old man Diesel first used peanut oil to run his first vehicle. We've had electric cars since the 1900s. And fuel-cell technology dates back to pre-1970. So, I'd say that the transportation sector revolution that some of these Futurists speak of, is slow in coming. And I think America is ready for now. What's the holdup?

Now then, I've read all the research articles and prepared studies, the books, articles, audiovisual presentations, and even listened to speeches at top-notch colleges, online, and I've probably scanned over more power point presentations than I care to admit. And yes there are lots of other products and far too many futurists, consultants, and innovative experts offering their services to help with patents, designs, and graphic renderings so that inventors, innovators, and entrepreneurs can reach their potential clients, organizations, and government procurement departments.

Still, I say to you this isn't good enough yet. And talk is cheap.

It is important for an idea to have a spokesperson and someone that can relate to the general public and help them envision such innovations which may create alternative futures for their products, or services but it's really more than that, and I'd say about now the revolution in transportation is needed. We need to bring these new materials to make over the road trucks, cars, and even military vehicles lighter so they use less fuel, and are safer. We have most of the technology we need now, but folks say it is a matter of cost, even though these new materials are cheaper to make.

The real issue is one with tooling, and supply chain. It takes a lot of time and cost to retool, and then you need a return on your investment. It seems we have too many people running around pretending to be professionals, and belonging to far too many professional organizations to be of any real use in innovation. What we need is to get the regulations out of the way of entrepreneurs and allow them to do what they do best; inventing and innovating. Sometimes I feel as if the innovation consultants act more like gatekeepers, and barriers to the very technological revolution they claim to be one with. Please consider all this.

What is pervasive computing? It all started in 1991 when Mark Weiser envisioned the next generation computer that weaves themselves into their environment. To illustrate the point, Weiser and his colleagues invented 3 types of devices: a tab, a pad and a board. The devices have no individualized association in they way that you associate a PC or laptop to a particular user, e.g. you can grab a tab and use it without having to figure out how you're going to configure or personalize it to your needs. A tab is a handheld device and can be easily carried around. You can use it to access your email, chat, or to pop up a reminder for you to ask a colleague to confirm next week's seminar if you run into him in the hallway. You'd have dozens of this in your environment.

A pad is kind of a digital version of a paper. You can spread it on your desk in the same way you spread papers on your desk.

The digital board replaces today's whiteboard. When a group of people gather in a room, the system detects that they belong to a project group and automatically downloads the previous discussion points on the board. You can write on the board using a digital pen while sitting a few meters away from it - just point and write.

Pervasive computing integrates computers and a smart environment, and blends them into the background. This technology is changing the way we work, live, and interact with each other.

Let's look at a few more examples of applications of this technology.

Cowboys on horsebacks herding cattle might one day become a feature of a bygone era as the introduction of virtual fences allows farmers to herd their cattle from the comfort of their homes. The virtual fence is downloaded to the cows by transmitting GPS coordinates to head-collars worn by the cows. The dynamic virtual fences are moved along desired trajectories. The collars are equipped with a Wi-Fi networking card, a Zaurus PDA, an eTrex GPS unit and a loudspeaker that transmits occurring sounds (for example, roaring tigers, barking dogs) when a cow strays from the intended path. This multi-disciplinary project, the brain child of a biologist, is made possible in collaboration with computer scientists.

Sensor technology can potentially play an important role in search and rescue operations by first responders, i.e. emergency personnel, such as firemen, paramedic, and police, who arrive at the scene immediately after an event (e.g. a fire, an earthquake, a building collapse) occurs.

Firemen wear tags to allow easy tracking of their movement in order to coordinate search and rescue operations more effectively. The firemen can be informed if a particular section of a building is found to be unstable and is about to collapse, and is directed to evacuate it immediately. A wireless vital sign monitor is attached to victims found trapped so that their condition can be monitored in order to ensure that they receive the appropriate medical attention as soon as they are rescued.

This non-invasive sensor monitors vital signs such as heart rate, oxygen saturation and serum chemistry measurements. The vital sign monitor helps the paramedic team determine which victims are in more critical conditions so that they can prioritize medical attention to more severely injured victims. The application and architecture required to support this emergency response application is being developed under the CodeBlue project at Harvard University, USA.

Wireless technology is also used in healthcare. The Arrhythmia Monitoring System (AMS) is a medical telemetry (telemedicine) system that makes use of wireless technology to monitor patients suffering from arrhythmia. Among the complications that arise from arrhythmia are the loss of regular heartbeat and subsequent loss of function, and rapid heartbeats.

AMS provides a means for healthcare professionals to continuously monitor a patient's electrical cardiac rhythms remotely even though the patient is not at the hospital. This technology allows patients to be in the comfort of their homes without jeopardizing their health. It is also useful for monitoring the heart functions of astronauts who are more susceptible to cardiac dysrhythmias when in space.
