Tablet PC's and the Future of Newspapers and Magazines

Tech fanatics and bloggers were quick to herald the introduction of tablet PC's as the next big thing since sliced bread. The media hype that followed was enough to send jitters down the spine of newspaper and magazine publishers. Sadly, the skyrocketing popularity of Slate PC's coincided with an ad recession that saw small time newspapers and magazines close shop. The new buzz word became apps and if you didn't own one, you were doomed in the future.

As it turns out, all these fears were unfounded. In general, there has been a decline in sale of subscription newspapers and magazines; but not due to Tablet Computers. According to analysts, reduction in newspaper sale was more as a result of the economic recession than technological revolution. In fact, the economic recovery has brought back advertisers and print sales have begun to stabilize.

The reason for the turnaround is simple to explain. The popularity of Tablet Computers and Smartphone's is not driven by news. Hard news falls behind games, music, movies, books and other entertainment applications found on these devices. Hence, most of the news content that is sampled on slates and Smartphone's is also read on print. As a matter of fact, many people use tablet computer news applications to supplement rather than replace their main news sources.

Initial reactions to Tablet Computers among publishers were varied. Some were quick to commission for news applications and immediately set up digital divisions. Others took a watch and wait approach, while the rest brushed off the threat. The first batch is probably the most frustrated currently since they are seeing no immediate returns. Most slate users do not find it necessary to pay for online news content. The figures for development and subscription of news applications are also quite prohibitive.

All in all, no forward-looking company can ignore the ever-growing tablet computer apps market. Currently, there are more than half a million apps in the market with three percent representing news companies. Albeit there is no particular rush for newspapers and magazines to join the apps market, the option should still be kept open. It is important for newspaper and magazine publishers to study the tablet consumer market before investing in apps. As such, they will be able to reinvent themselves online and not simply replicate what others are doing.

Tablet computers have become all the rage since they were introduced in the market a couple of years back. Many people thought that newspapers and magazines had been relegated to the deathbed. Contrary to this, publishers are witnessing substantial returns from sales and advertisement. However, many publishers have also taken note of the potential in the tablet computers apps market and joined the fray.

What is the Future of Cloud Computing Part III


Let's bring this full circle from Part I and II. With regards to the future viabilty of cloud computing .... there are questions to be answered and there are issues to be considered. But there also advantages and opportunities too. You need to understand the whole picture to draw an informed conclusion.

Repeating the questions from Part I:

* With so many companies rushing to announce their development in cloud computing /SaaS/PaaS in 2009, is cloud computing really economically viable in the long-term?

* Will large enterprises and Small and medium businesses actually go in for cloud computing and virtualization?

* What will be the benefits and problems associated with the same?

* Which industries are more likely to be the front-runners in cloud implementation?

I believe as more companies continue to develop and push lots of money into cloud computing technologies .... we will see both large and small businesses sign on. As the supply increases, smaller companies can take advantage as the costs will decrease. For larger companies, they will see other benefits of this such as disaster recovery, uptime requirements, and quicker delivery to worldwide customers.

When looking at the benefits and risks of this technology I think it largely depends on whether the cloud is public or private. Private clouds offer lower risk for companies but at higher cost due to the entity footing the entire bill for the technology, while public clouds such as Amazon offer lower costs but more risks due to private information being saved on public systems. The benefits of both are similar, if done right. Companies will be able to take advantage of better uptime, reduction of downtime due to failures, and improved availability to customers.

Any industry that pushes information to mass communities spread around the world will be the front-runners. These would mostly be media companies such as news outlets, with their main focus of getting information out to the customer the fastest. In an example of the news, the company who can spread a story the fastest will get more readers. So using this technology to get the story to the customers around the world the fastest will have more readers and benefit from cloud computing.

The advantages of this new model are clear and massive. The customer still has full control of their services via various web admin portals, but they now don't need to buy the hardware outright, house it in a rack, pay for the power, the air cooling, the upgrades, the maintenance, the expensive engineers to support them, the replacement of hardware, the list goes on.... They get to pay for what they want, when they need it. Just like water from a tap, or electricity from the socket.

Technology and the Mind of the Future


Discoveries in the area of neuroplasticity over the past few decades have highlighted the ability for our minds to influence the structure of our brains. Scientists from around the globe have discovered that our experiences will affect how we are neurologically organized. While surgery, medications, and the various forms of psychotherapy, to including hypnosis, have their effects, our existence in an environment of exponentially rapid technological growth is becoming a major factor in the future direction of our minds and the history of humanity. Our electronic "toys" not only affect our professional and social lives. They also impact on how we remember, think, and imagine.

In a very few short decades we have experienced a revolution as the rate of technological innovation has grown seemingly out of control. I vividly remember one evening in Germany where I was performing a tour as our battalion's Staff Duty Officer. The year was 1980. Upon visiting a squad room in headquarters company, I came upon a young soldier, who had recently arrived from the States. He was sitting at his desk intensely looking at the screen of a small TV hooked up to a 4K Tandy computer. I was amazed. At that time my most sophisticated tech device was an expensive TI four-function calculator. Yet today with our smart homes, iPods, Web-enabled, multimedia cell phones, and our 24/7 access to the Internet, the way we think, remember, and communicate has drastically changed.

For decades most neurologists believed that all brain functions were localized in specific geographic areas and that once a capability was lost through trauma or abuse, it was gone forever. However, researchers such as Michael Merzenich, PhD, at UCSF, Edward Taub, PhD, at UAB, and Alvaro Pascual-Leone, MD, at the Harvard Medical School have shown that experience can restructure the brain. When neural substrates or subordinate networks of neurons become dormant, nearby networks extend into the underutilized areas with all the obsessive enthusiasm of Alabama kudzu. When networks are repeatedly used, then they become denser and more dominant. And, when entire substrates become dysfunctional due to stroke or trauma, entire functions may be relocated to another area. So, what does this mean in our technologically driven world?

On one hand, technology allows us to bypass and weaken certain areas of the brain. For instance, my wife has caught me more than once doing simple arithmetic with my HP 12-C rather than attempting to work such problems out in my head as I was taught to do in grammar school. While I'm somewhat embarrassed by some of my new tech-driven habits, I realize that some of the laziness is both promoting neural disuse and giving an opportunity for new networks to begin an encroachment process. Although I do not willingly desire to loose my ability to calculate without electronic devices, I also realize that I am allowing my brain to restructure and develop new capabilities. So, as I acknowledge that I must prevent my total dependence upon these devices, I must also appreciate my new-found abilities.

Advances in technology, which literally means "process", allow me new ways to perform much more than simple calculations. The ability to retrieve visual, auditory, and semantic data, to sort it by relevance (i.e., Google PageRank), to analyze it through spreadsheets and database queries, and to then store it for later use (i.e., recall) has been greatly enhanced. While all of these capabilities seem to mostly reside in the meta-human realm of computer electronics, these enhanced information processing and memory/recall functions are experienced at the neural level. Therefore, they must have some mind (or brain) expanding impact. More neurons are used. More neural processes are involved. Thus, existing in a technological world is beneficial to our brains.

Think for a moment about just a few of the affected substrates. The imagination, anticipation, and assignment of meaning functions of the right orbitofrontal cortex are strengthened. The thought switching capabilities of the anterior cingulate cortex is fortified. Our explicit and implicit memory functions are enhanced as they are magnified by their partnership with computer storage. And, our sense of self as somewhat determined by the insula is expanded as we communicate with others around the globe.

However, as I implied in the calculator example, we must be vigilant as some advantages may be outweighed by the disadvantages. We may allow technology to become a crutch which retards mental function to the point that we become totally incapable of operating when the batteries die out or a connection is lost. The mind-expanding value of social networking, such as Facebook and MySpace, should not allow our ability to communicate face-to-face to wither. And we should also realize the dangers of addictive behavior brought on by dopamine and endorphin rushes as is too often found with video games, virtual reality, and even pornography.

Nevertheless, if we guard ourselves from the abuses and pitfalls of technology, it has the capability to further human evolution and hopefully become a tool for a better world. However, both are in the realm of quantum possibilities. The answer to this dilemma may be found in a discussion of exactly which part of the brain is predominantly affected. If technology is chiefly interfacing with our more primitive brain structures, such as our emotional and reactive limbic system, then our addictive tendency will result in our seeking even more intense thrills. Yet, if it enhances our cognitive functions as represented by our frontal lobe, then our increased ability to think, remember, and imagine moves us toward a higher state of human functioning.

Regardless, the existence of electronic and computing technology is here to stay. Like any revolution in human processes, such as gun powder, nuclear power, the sextant, and the printing press, it is our choice whether it leads us into another Dark Age or it takes us to a Renaissance in which we redefine what it means to be human.

What Is The Future of the Computer?


The history of computing is one that only really took off towards the second half of the 20th century, but it has involved such rapid change that the computers we are all so comfortable within our homes today are unrecognizable compared to the earliest computers, which took up entire rooms and yet could only perform the simplest functions. Despite the rapid advances that have already taken place, computer technology is still developing rapidly, which makes the future of the computer one that could involve changes that are even more incredible than those that have already taken place. According to "Moore's Law" computers will continue to increase in value and performance while decreasing in cost. They will become smaller, but faster and more powerful.

Although predicting the future always involves a degree of uncertainty, it is possible to make some educated guesses about what the future of the computer will look like, based upon the types of technologies that are currently being developed. A great deal of progress has already made in some of these new technologies, but some are still in their earliest stages and may not be ready for use for decades. Two of the most interesting areas of computing that are currently being developed are quantum computing and nanotechnology.

Quantum computing is one possibility for the future of the computer that could enable computers to run far faster than even the quickest computers do today. Quantum computers could be able to perform functions that modern supercomputers are unable to handle, by using transistors that are able to take on multiple states at the same time rather than being simply on or off to encode binary information.

Nanotechnology could also change the face of computing, by creating computers that could be powerful, despite their tiny size. These miniscule computers could be incorporated into everyday objects, including electric appliances, clothes and even the human body. With these nano computers surrounding us, we will be able to use computers in new and unimaginable ways. They will become a part of every aspect of our lives rather than simply being a box that is used only for specific purposes, such as work.

Quantum computers and nanotechnology will be able to offer new functions, including personalized services. The types of technologies that are being proposed as the future of the computer include flying cars, holograms instead of video calls, artificial intelligence and teleportation. Advances in computer technology will enable us to live greener and more sustainable lives, as well as to enjoy better health and happier lives.
